Well when I was thinking about making real life films, I didn't mean this, DOGME thing, or whatever. I was thinking more along the lines of these rules...

    1. The cops don't get there after the movie is over. ( EVERY ACTION MOVIE!! )

    2. No the colonist arn't all dead by the time we get there. ( Let's see someone getting ripped to shreads before the end of the movie please. )

    3. Yes more bad guys, not just one bad guy. ( The reason I like ALIENS rather then ALIEN )

    4. The good guy gets his butt kicked at least 4 times in the movie. ( This rules out any steven segal movie. )

    5. No the damn lizard can't dodge missles. ( Godzilla Flaws )

I hate watching predictable movies, you know who is going to die before they do. ALIENS is a perfect example of this. They introduced you mainly to, Hicks, Hudson, Vaskes ( the muscle girl. ) and the stupid boss man who didn't know what the hell he was talking about. So you knew these guys were going to be the last to die. Kinda leaving you in suspense on which one is going to get it first. Aliens is my all time favorite movie. (except the last 15 minutes of it.) But through the whole thing. The Marines were on there toes, never sitting down. NEVER!! Having a cup of coffee or the love romantic 15 minutes where somehow why they are trying to be killed the hero and the rescued girl have time for a quicky.

I think the best way to make a great film, is make a 5 hour movie, and then remake everything you did in 5 hours to 2 hours. CUT out the dull shit and do the more realistic stuff. ON BLADE instead of showing him chasing the cop for 5 minutes, or showing day after day, they did that fast forward crap, which gave the movie not only a cool look, but a more realistic look on the time level. In Desperado and From Dusk Til Dawn, I love they way the skip the time, showing banderas walking, disappear, a little further down the road, disappear, even further. There not going to show him walking for 5 minutes of film so they skipped it to give you the idea that he is walking a long time to the next city. Anyways, I got to go work on my 15, 000 dollar movie now, take care all...

What's the problem Thief? I think everything I said was totally right. Everytime I go to the movies, and see these lame movies, that anyone could make twice as better with twice as less money. The crap gets on my nerves. Please do respond, I would like to know what, you were replying WTF too.

I have a question to you...WHAT IS ORIGINAL?
All movies are formulated. There's a great quote by a wise man that says "everything worth being done was invented by the Romans." That's absolutly true. I can sit down and make out formulas for every movie I've ever seen:

Oh so you want an example?

Star wars was Lucas ripping off ThE WIZARD OF OZ. Dont believe me...here it goes:

a person is forced to enter a different reality, or facet of their lives. Said person meets up with a band of misfits who will eventually prove worthy. Land of the Midgets who eventually give dorothy direction (showing her the yellow brick road that sets her on her journey), Jawas sell Luke R2 who eventually shows Luke Leia's message, sending him on his journey. You also have your wicked witch (the dark side) against the Good witch (the force). Who does dorthy or luke eventually go to. A man who hides behind a scarey facade (e.g the wizards modified vioce, Darth vaders modified voice) and eventually ends up happy. Now that's the plot of 40,000,000 different movies but it just seems to fit better with STAR WARS and WIZARD OF OZ.

    Think about it!

Who said orginal? I was just doing a few notes on making more realistic movies. I wasn't tring to be a critic, just a few pointers on making more realistic movies. The hero sitting there shooting his machine gun for an hour, and then at the end the cops finally show up. Or what about blade walking around town with a damn sword on his back. HELLO! Can I see your consealed weapon liscense. I was talking about realisim. That's all.

This is what many people dont understand...
When you make a movie you have to think about what the audience wants...These reoccuring storylines are the conventions of film. Audiences are used to it and audiences like it..so dont upset them...the colonists have to be dead before we get there...and there is always one bad guy that runs the show...remenmber - there is Queen alien, the big baddie, the final conflict, there is always a final conflict...its the rules!!!
Know you movies and study film! just like me!...or your in a world of pain!...if your audience does not like you, who will?

I think you're all wrong, with the exception of Johnny16mm.

First off, I agree with you Dragon666 that many movies today are predictable and lame BUT all your complaints are referring to action/adventure-type movies. The REASON they are so alike is because they all belong to the same genre-- the hollywoodized ACTION/ADVENTURE.
To satisfy your needs, try watching a film that's not a mainstream, big-budget, money-making machine. Obviously you aren't going to find any originality or realism if the only place you look is $130 mil+ land.

Also, you are contradicting yourself. First you say do realistic stuff, then you say cut out the dull . With your BLADE example, you praised it's portrayal of time...they did some fast-forward effects, showed sun-rises/sun-sets to represent passing days, etc. Is that what you call realistic? Does the sun rise and fall that fast in real life? Do people truly run that fast? No! Of course not! But did you understand what the meaning of the scenes were? Did the movie get it's point across? Yes! That's what films are all about, getting their point across! Telling the audience what the creators want said! If it can be done in an "unrealistic" fashion, so be it! Many movies are! Unfortunatley, you are critquing plain BAD movies and saying the MAJORITY of movies are like that.
    Watch man, watch it.

And to Dirk Diggler..there are no rules in filmmaking.

    Dirk Diggler quipped:

"know YOU movies and study film JUST LIKE ME!"
    --------------------------------------------

*slaps Dirk on the back of the head!*

Don't get condesending with me young man! I'll eat you for lunch! I HOPE TO GOD YOU AREN'T TALKING ABOUT FILM SCHOOL. If you are, you've truly been a great example of THE FILM SCHOOL curse and everyhting wrong with movie making and reasons we have movies like MISSION TO MARS.

Basically at film school (yes I went for a year and a half) you learn how to make movies....LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE. Hense why you rave about FORMULAS and WHAT THE AUDIENCE WANTS.

I'll buy the WHAT THE AUDIENCE WANTS argument to a certain extent but give me a break. What is film. Film is entertainment? Half right. FILM IS ART. Simply put, film IS an artform and it should be treated accordingly.

Do you think PICASSO was thinking
"HMM...Maybe I shouldn't make this guys NOSE above his EYES and arm coming from his hip because I don't think people will get it." HELL NO. He jumped in there and painted what he felt. Why don't we do that as film makers? ESPECIALLY as INDIE film makers? Because we think (since the film explosion spearheaded by Coppola, Lucas, and Scorsese in the late 60's early 70's) WE HAVE TO GO TO FILM SCHOOL TO BE SUCCESFUL. That's LUDICROUS! Any MONKEY with a shitty camcorder can make a GREAT movie. SCREW FORMULAS and WHAT WILL BE BEST DIGESTED BY A MASS AUDIENCE. Get over that. That's the way MIRAMAX, and 20th CENTURY FOX thinks and that's why Hollywood is in a PISS POOR state right now. WE NEED FRESH THINKING AND FRESH IDEAS!

So DIRK if you AREN'T a film school guy, CONGRATUALTIONS because you have succeeded in mastering the nose-in-the-air, BE LIKE ME, condesending, conformist, FORMULATED, make-my-movies-however-people-want-me-to-no- matter-how-much-I-sacrifice-integrity-and- art, SHOW ME THE MONEY, attitudes of all the film students I've ever met. WAY TO GO.

Now get off your pedastal and [b]MAKE SOME REAL MOVIES[b].

    Later,
    J16MM

When Im at the top!...I'll be teaching you!!
You have to know the conventions to break them! Who said anything about liking the rules...I sure didnt make them but they are worth learning to understand the art of filmmaking! Cheers for the input!
